Renewing your Arizona contractor license

This is general information, not legal advice. This is a plain-language summary of A.R.S. §§ 32-1123.01, 32-1125, 32-1125.01, and 32-1126 and the Registrar's renewal pages. It is not a form from the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Check your license record and current ROC guidance before you rely on it.

When your license comes due

A.R.S. § 32-1123.01(A)–(B) says ROC licenses renew every two years, on a staggered schedule spread through the year. § 32-1123.01(C) says a contractor can petition in writing for annual renewal if the two-year cycle would cause a real and immediate hardship. § 32-1126(B) says that annual renewal fee is one-half of the biennial license renewal fee. The statute does not say the Recovery Fund assessment is halved.

§ 32-1124(F) says a licensee with more than one license may be allowed a common expiration date, with fees prorated.

Your renewal date is on your license record. Look it up on the ROC portal. Don't wait for a reminder.

What happens if you miss the date

§ 32-1125(A) says a license is suspended by operation of law on the next business day after its renewal date, except for the military extension in § 32-4301. If the renewal application, with a valid bond or cash deposit on file and the fee, is received by the Registrar, or mailed postage prepaid, on or before the renewal date, you can keep operating until the renewal is issued.

Within one year of a suspension for failure to renew, you can reactivate by filing the application and paying the renewal fee plus a $50 fee. § 32-1126(D) and the Registrar's renewal checklist both name that $50 late fee. After more than one year suspended, you must apply for a new license. (§ 32-1125(B))

Military service

§ 32-4301(A) says a license held by a National Guard or reserve member on federal active duty does not expire while they serve and is extended 180 days after they return. Licenses held by regular-component service members are extended 180 days from the expiration date. The member or their representative must notify the issuing authority.

What renewal costs

The amounts below are the Registrar's license and renewal fee table, which that page labels effective July 1, 2014, for a two-year license. The Registrar is authorized to set them under § 32-1126. Fees can change. Confirm the current amounts on that page before you pay.

ClassificationLicense feeRecovery FundRenewal total
General commercial (A, B-1, B-2)$580$0$580
Specialty commercial (C)$480$0$480
General residential (B, B-3, B-4, B-5, B-6, B-10)$320$270$590
Specialty residential (R)$270$270$540
General dual (KA, KB-1, KB-2, KE, KO)$480$270$750
Specialty dual (CR)$380$270$650

The statute sets ceilings. Specialty residential renewal is not more than $270, and the Recovery Fund assessment is not more than $600 during the biennial license period. (§ 32-1126(A)(2), (G)) Late renewal adds $50. (§ 32-1126(D))

The renewal checklist

The Registrar's renewal checklist, in short:

  1. LLCs and corporations: confirm Arizona Corporation Commission status is active and in good standing. (§ 32-1122(B)(1)(g))
  2. Confirm the bond is active and the amount covers your annual volume. A volume increase needs a bond rider. See the bond page.
  3. Have your workers' compensation policy number and carrier ready. If you have no employees, select the exemption. (§ 32-1122(B)(1)(i))
  4. Log in to the ROC portal and renew from the dashboard.
  5. Pay the fees, then click Submit. ROC says the request is not received otherwise.
  6. ROC reviews it. Portal renewals that need bond updates are approved automatically and then reviewed for a sufficient bond. ROC notifies errors by phone, email, and mail.

Renewals can also be submitted by mail or in person. Between renewals, report changes to license information within 30 days. (§ 32-1122(B)(4))

Taking a break

§ 32-1125.01 says you can ask ROC to make a license inactive for up to five years at a time, at most twice. You cannot contract while it is inactive. Reactivating costs the current renewal fee and requires 30 days' written notice, with no exam. ROC does not refund renewal fees already paid.

Put the ROC number where the law says. § 32-1124(B) requires the license number, preceded by ROC, on bids and estimates, on advertising and customer correspondence, and on internet ads, unless the ad links to a website that prominently shows your name and license number. Estimate Lite has an AZ ROC # line in its header. The free website and Google profile checklist has a license-number item. A SiteReady preview puts the number on the site.

Common questions

How often do I renew?

Every two years under § 32-1123.01(A). ROC can allow annual renewal on a written hardship petition under § 32-1123.01(C).

Is there a grace period?

No. The license is suspended the next business day after the renewal date. Renewing on time, received or postmarked by the date, lets you keep working until the renewal issues. Within one year you can reactivate for the renewal fee plus $50. (§ 32-1125)

What if it has been more than a year?

You need a new license application. (§ 32-1125(B))

How much is renewal?

On the Registrar's table, the classes above run from $480 to $750. Residential and dual include the $270 Recovery Fund assessment. Confirm the row for your class on the fee page.

Can I renew online?

Yes, through the ROC portal. Mail and in person also work.

Can I work while the renewal is processing?

Yes, if the application, fee, and a valid bond were on file or mailed by the renewal date. (§ 32-1125(A))
